PROJECTS ONLINE: ADJUSTING A CLOSET DOOR

    Project Difficulty: Easy
Estimated Project Time: A few minutes

    Tools and Materials:

    Screwdriver
    Stepladder, as needed

Most closet doors have top-mounted wheel assemblies that travel on a ribbed aluminum track. Bypassing doors also have a plastic guide on the floor to keep the doors in alignment. To help prevent problems, open and close the doors with care, trying not to force them open or closed. Keep all of your clothing, shoes, and accessories away from the track or guide and periodically vacuum or sweep up dirt, dust, and debris that might be clogging them. When the doors do not operate smoothly, first check the track to make sure that it is tight against the header. Then adjust the wheels to raise or lower the doors as needed. To adjust bifolding doors, loosen the bifold pivots at the bottom and top of the door, adjust as needed, and retighten.

    1. Check the Track

Bypassing or bifolding closet doors will not operate smoothly unless the aluminum track is screwed securely to the header (Fig. 1). If necessary, use a stepladder to reach the header.

    2. Raise or Lower Bypassing Doors

To raise or lower bypassing doors, use a screwdriver to turn the adjustment mechanism attached to the track wheels. (Fig. 2)

    3. Adjust Plastic Floor Guide

To keep bypassing doors from banging into each other, you may need to adjust or tighten the plastic floor guide. Use a screwdriver to loosen and tighten the screws holding the guide to the floor. (Fig. 3)
