Plunger
Small waste bucket or plastic cup
Closet auger
Too much toilet paper at the time of flushing is the usual cause of toilet clogs. But you can handle this easily with a plunger. However, a plunger can’t help you if someone’s rubber ducky or other object mistakenly falls into the bowl, gets flushed, and lodges at the top of the trap or at the flange. In this case, use a closet auger, which is a flexible tool that you can turn easily into the trap in the bowl, and then snag the object.
1.
Remove Debris
With a small waste bucket or plastic cup, remove as much debris from the bowl as possible.
2.
Use the Auger
Move the closet auger under and down the bowl to the blockage (Fig. 1). To do this, pull the handle so that the cable is drawn into the auger's pipe-like body. Feed the bend of the auger into the toilet's drain outlet, with the cable pointing toward the top of the trap. Then crank clockwise while pushing the cable through the trap. The cable is only long enough to reach the floor flange, so when you've pushed all the way through, retrieve the cable while continuing to crank in a clockwise direction. Repeat this procedure three times, aiming the cable right, left and center through the trap. If you feel the cable bear down, retrieve it, and with luck, the object causing the clog will be attached. Remove the object.
