PROJECTS ONLINE: CHILD SAFETY--KEEPING YOUR CHILD AWAY FROM POISONOUS SUBSTANCES
Project Difficulty:
Moderate
There are many items around your home that can prove to be poisonous. Keep the following safety tips in mind to keep your child safe.
1.
An Ounce of Prevention....
Think about cosmetics, toiletries, and pet care products that all must be kept out of reach. Add to that list many household and garden plants, as well as herbs. Food supplements, such as iron tablets, can also be fatal. You must keep these out of reach by blocking access to the cabinet or drawer with safety latches and locks. (Fig. 1)
Child-resistant caps found on medicine bottles and many cleaning products are not always childproof. These caps are meant to slow your child's attempts to open bottles so that you have time to prevent harm, but they won't stop him or her altogether.
Keep cleaning supplies in their original containers with the manufacturer's ingredients label. This is important information that will help a poison control center determine the proper treatment for your child if a product is ingested.
Remember to keep emergency numbers for the poison control center, a medical doctor, an ambulance service, and the local hospital by your phone.
