If you have an existing home, rather than one in the process of being built, you may have the option to install battery-operated smoke detectors instead of the AC-powered units required in new construction. Battery-operated units are convenient in that they are easy to install and will operate when the power is out. AC-powered units sometimes have a battery backup.
Before installing your smoke detector, check with your local fire department to find out the requirements for your area, which will vary depending on where you live. Also, read the manufacturer's instructions to find out where to locate your detector.
1.
Mark Location
Once you've determined the proper location for your unit, open the unit, hold the base to the ceiling, and mark the location of the mounting holes on the ceiling with a pencil. (Fig. 1)
2.
Drill the Holes
Set the unit aside; then drill holes at the marks. (Fig. 2)
3.
Insert Anchors
Insert plastic anchors into the holes, and tap them gently into place with a hammer. (Fig. 3)
4.
Insert Screws
With a screwdriver, tighten the screws almost all the way into the anchors. (Fig. 4)
5.
Attach Unit
Place the slots on the base of the unit over the screws. Rotate the unit to its final orientation, and then tighten the screws to secure the unit to the ceiling. (Fig. 5)
6.
Insert Battery
Install the battery securely into the terminals of the smoke alarm (Fig. 6). Close the unit and test it according to manufacturer's directions. (Fig. 7)
