PROJECTS ONLINE: INSTALLING A DOOR SECURITY BAR

    Project Difficulty: Easy
    Estimated Project Time: 3 minutes

    Tools and Materials:

    Door security bar
    Measuring tape

No one should be without a portable door security bar, a simple security device to use at home or on the road. To enhance your existing locks (and your peace of mind), simply wedge this high-strength aluminum security bar at an angle from doorknob to floor. (Fig. 1)

Door security bars typically feature a top yoke that slips around most doorknobs, an adjustable-length bar, and a bottom boot which securely grips the floor. Some door security bars feature a locking lever on the handle that, when cranked, expands the bar a bit further toward the door and discourages the bar from being worked loose.

Another advantage to using this bar instead of, say, a chair, is the built-in padding on the bar's foot which saves carpets from dents and finished floors from marring. The bar can be used on any permanent flooring, but not on scatter rugs, loose rugs, or floor mats.

The following instructions are guidelines to supplement the instructions packaged with your bar.

    1. Shut the Door
Close the door and lock it.

    2. Place Under Doorknob
Wedge the yoke of the security bar tightly under the doorknob.

    3. Adjust the Length
Extend the adjustable section of the bar so that the foot is about 15 to 18 inches from the doorjamb.

    4. Lock the Bar
Now, lock the bar at this length--on many models, push buttons pop into place (much like those on vacuum cleaner tube extensions).

    5. Slide Towards Door
Slide the security bar's foot towards the door until the bar is snug in an angled position.

    6. Activate Locking Device
If there's a lever or other final locking device, activate it to further secure the bar.
