The right accessories will make you and your router a lot more productive. In fact, you really can’t begin to appreciate the versatile potential of your router until you add a few accessories. To start you off, here are some basic recommendations.
1.
Edge Guide
This accessory allows you to guide your router along the edge of stock for routing edges or making dadoes or grooves. With a plunge router, you can use an edge guide to make mortises as well. (Fig. 1)
2.
Router Table
This accessory will let you use your router like a small shaper. A router table is ideal for applications where it’s safer to bring the material to the tool, such as when cutting tenons, making moldings, or raising panels, and this is the preferred way to work with a larger, heavier router. When selecting a router table, make sure it will mate with your brand and model of router. Kits and accessories are also available for you to make your own router table. (Fig. 2)
3.
Dovetail Jigs
One of the most popular accessories for routers is the dovetail jig. With this device you can cut precise dovetail joints easily with your router. Dovetail jigs range from simple guides to elaborate devices that can cut both through and blind dovetail joints as well as varying the size and spacing of the joints.
