If your sheet paneling contains a large hole, crack, or blemish, you may need to replace the damaged area with a patch of similar material.
1.
Prepare the Patch Piece
Choose a patch piece of paneling that closely matches the color, grain, and groove pattern of the area that needs replacing. Using a circular saw, cut the piece to size; be sure to wear safety goggles, a dust mask, and hearing protectors when using the saw. (Fig. 1)
2.
Make an Outline
Tape the patch over the damaged area, and use a utility knife to score the patch outline onto the damaged wall panel. (Fig. 2)
3.
Remove the Damaged Paneling
Remove the patch, and keep scoring carefully with the utility knife until you cut all the way through the old paneling. (Fig. 3)
4.
Attach Furring Strips
Glue furring strips behind the hole to support the patch piece. Clamp the pieces in place, and let the adhesive dry completely. (Fig. 4)
5.
Apply Adhesive
Apply panel adhesive to mating surfaces of the furring and the patch piece, and set the patch in position. (Fig. 5)
6.
Nail the Patch
Seat the patch piece firmly; then countersink color-matched paneling nails around the perimeter, and putty the holes. (Fig. 6)
