Whenever you remove the sash from a window frame, such as when replacing broken glass, take the opportunity to do some maintenance.
1.
Clean Channel
With a vacuum or brush, clean out the window channel.
2.
Wax and Buff Channel
Coat the channel with paste wax, and buff the wax with a cloth. If the channel is really dirty, first rub the channel with fine steel wool, and then wax and buff it.
3.
Straighten Channel
If the channel is bent, try straightening it with a rubber hammer: place a block of wood in the channel where the window slides, and then tap the metal lightly with the rubber hammer to straighten it.
4.
Replace Weatherstripping
If weatherstripping on the window is loose or damaged, install replacement weatherstripping according to the manufacturer’s instructions. (Fig. 1)
