PROJECTS ONLINE: HOW TO CLEAN WINDOWS BEFORE APPLYING WINDOW FILM

    Project Difficulty: Easy
Estimated Project Time: 15 minutes per window

    Tools and Materials:

    1 teaspoon clear dishwashing detergent
    1 quart distilled water
    Spray bottle
    Razor-type scraper
    Squeegee
    Lint-free cloth

The most important step in getting a great-looking window film installation is to have the glass squeaky clean before applying the film. You’ll need a special soapy solution for this task. Use the commercial product recommended in your kit instructions, or make your own non-ammonia solution by adding 1 teaspoon clear dishwashing detergent to 1 quart of distilled (soft) water. Put the solution in a spray (pump or trigger) bottle so that you can squirt it onto the glass and film surfaces.

    1. How to Clean the Windows

Use a razor-type scraper to remove any decals, dried paint, or other baked on grime on your window (Fig. 1). Then wash the window(s) thoroughly with the soapy water solution, using a squeegee in an up-and-down motion (Fig. 2). Wipe water out of corners with a lint-free cloth. You may want to repeat the cleaning just to be absolutely sure because any missed specks of dirt will stand out when the film is applied, spoiling the job.
