    Table or radial arm saw
    Framing square
    Pencil
    Ruler
    Power drill
    Phillips screwdriver
2 lbs. 1-1/4" galvanized deck screws
1 lb. 2" galvanized deck screws

    Cutting List:
    2 upper sides 3/4" x 7-1/4" x 18" cut from a 1 x 8 x 12'
    2 lower sides 3/4" x 7-1/4" x 17" cut from a 1 x 8 x 12'
    4 front/back 3/4" x 7-1/4" x 37" cut from a 1 x 8 x 12'

    2 bottoms 3/4" x 7-1/4" x 35" cut from a 1 x 8 x 12'
    4 corner trim 3/4" x 1-1/2" x 14-1/2" cut from a 1 x 2 x 10'
    4 wide corner trim 3/4" x 2-1/2" x 14-1/2" cut from a 1 x 3 x 6'
    3 vertical lattice 3/4" x 2-1/2" x 72" cut from a 1 x 3 x 6'
    4 horizontal lattice 3/4" x 1-1/2" x length to fit from a 1 x 2 x 8'
    1 horizontal lattice 3/4" x 1-1/2" x length to fit from a 1 x 2 x 10'
    3 bottom supports 3/4" x 3-1/2" x 15-1/8" cut from a 1 x 4 x 4'

This trellis rises up and outward from a box large enough to root almost any vegetable or decorative plant. It is designed to sit on a patio or deck. Three bottom supports, cut from pressure-treated wood, allow it to drain properly. (Fig. 1)

    1. Cut the Front and Side Pieces

Using a table or radial arm saw, cut the front and sides to the sizes listed in the cutting list. The sizes listed are slightly longer than needed so that you have room to lay out and cut the shapes illustrated in Figure 2. To obtain the proper angle at the corner, first lay out the top edge of each piece. With a framing square, draw lines connecting the top corners to the bottom edge of each piece. To locate the new bottom corners, measure inward 3/8 inch and make a mark. Draw lines connecting the upper corners and the new marks as shown, and cut on those lines.

    2. Assemble the Box

Drill pilot holes and screw the sides, front, back, and bottom of the box together using 2-inch deck screws as shown in Figure 3. There will be a gap of about 1/8 inch between the bottom pieces, which allows excess moisture to escape.

    3. Add Trim and Bottom Supports

Cut the corner and wide corner trim pieces to the sizes given in the materials list. Attach the trim pieces as shown in Figure 4, using 1-1/4-inch deck screws. Fasten the narrower pieces first, positioning them flush with the corners of the box. Secure the wide trim pieces next, positioning them flush with the trim already in place.

Cut three bottom supports to the size listed in cutting list and attach them to the underside of the box, using 1-1/4-inch deck screws. Set the two outside pieces 1/2 inch back from the ends of the box, so that they won't be visible.

    4. Attach Lattice Pieces

Cut the three vertical lattice pieces to size. Using 1-1/4-inch deck screws, attach a vertical piece to each of the back inside corners and a third piece to the center of the box. The outer pieces will follow the angle of the box; attach the center piece so that it is square to the box. The horizontal lattice pieces overhang the vertical lattice pieces by 1-1/2 inches, as shown in Figure 5. Measure and cut to fit. Slight variations in the cutting of the box could cause the angle to change substantially. Attach the horizontal lattice pieces every 11 inches on center using 1-1/4-inch deck screws.
